Des réponses de mes copines US grimpeuses et féministes (en anglais). Bonne lecture.
If she wants to consent to being photographed naked for publication, she is an adult. She has the rights to her own body.
Maybe you think a « climbing » magazine should not have published it, or maybe you think people « shouldn’t » buy it because of that, but neither are on her.
Some thoughts in no particular order.
-I do not like SBC and her shallow brand of « hot », but I support her right to have naked photo shoots, and to make money on such photo shoots
-while I dislike SBC, I dislike the guys who follow her on Instagram, JUST because she posts lots of half-naked shots of herself even more. But I support their right to follow whoever-the-heck for whatever reason.
-she is basically a model. Sure, she is also a « professional climber », but really, she is a model more than a climber. And models do a lot of photo shoots, and some of them are naked, and I don’t care.
-I do not think the naked photos of her are fundamentally different from almost-naked photos of her in tight short-shorts and a bikini top. Both are meant to attract a certain audience, and I think the audience is the same, whether there is bikini top in the pic, or not.
-I do not think SHE is objectifying women. I think whatever company that used her naked shot to sell whatever it is they are selling in that French climbing mag is objectifying women.
SBC is simply cashing in on the asset she has, ei her looks.
Maybe she has some other assets she could be cashing on, or maybe she could be developing some other worthy skills if she didn’t have the cute young wholesomely-sporty blonde look to sell, but she can probably do both, if she wanted to. And maybe she is doing just that.
I do not know much about her as a person, beyond seeing her pictures on social media when someone shares them. I personally would have more respect for her if she were doing something « worthwhile » with her life, in addition to accumulating a large number of followers on Instagram, but that’s my personal value judgement. It is hard to put relative « worth » on different activities. Are doctors more worthy than models? That’s a ridiculous statement to make!
