Here is your itinerary for climbing and Cost per person per trip.
Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi
Your trip leader will pick you up upon your arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport. A car will take you to your hotel.
Day 2: Machame Camp (3000m/10,000’)
Leave from your hotel after breakfast drive to Machame gate to meet your guides and porters. You are ready to start the climb. Machame gate to Machame Camp is about 3000m. Hiking time is 5-7 hours through the thick tropical forest. B.L.D.
Day 3: Shira Camp (3840m/12,600’)
Today is an easy paced acclimatization day. You will hike over streams, a river gorge, and moorlands. Camp is located on the Shira Plateau, providing views of Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Hiking time is 4-5 hours. B.L.D.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3950m/13,000’)
Today is an important acclimatization day as you travel up to 4250M/15,000’ before spending the night at Barranco. You will ascend through the moorlands to the alpine zone where the only plant life is the heartiest of grasses and lichens. This is the high altitude desert, with glorious views of the Western Breach of Kibo. After about 4 hours the path forks to the right and descends into a gorge (‘Barranco’ in Swahili). There is a fair bit of ‘up and down’ walking today which can be quite tiring. Hiking time is 5 to 6 hours. B.L.D.
Day 5: Lava Tower (4573m/15,000’)
We have a mostly uphill climb today of 5 hours to the alpine moorland zone where plants are extremely hardy and consist of lichens, grasses, and heather. After an early afternoon rest we will take a 2 hour roundtrip acclimatization climb up the Lava Tower. This scramble will help prepare us for the ascent up the Western Breach .B.L.D.
Day 6: Arrow Glacier Camp (4630m/15,300)
Today you will continue the climb toward the Western Breach ascent route. Rather than traversing farther around the southern slopes of the mountain we ascend up and slightly westward, climbing easy terrain through scree and rocky ridges. The ascent gives us stunning views of the Western Breach wall and the Breach Icicle. As we near the Arrow Glacier and our campsite, the views open toward the west and the entire Shira Plateau lies below us. B.L.D
Day 7: Uhuru Peak (5895m/19,340’)/Mweka High Camp (11,000’)
We will rise very early around 1 am to ascend the Great Western Breach, an imposing, steep wall of rock leading to the edge of Kibo’s Crater (7-8hrs). The high altitude of the crater makes it a physically demanding experience, but the reward of the glaciers makes it all worth while. We then make the final 1,000 ft (1-2hrs) hike to Uhuru Peak. You will reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet, around 8 a.m. At this early hour, before the clouds close in, we have spectacular views of Africa in all directions. You then head back down, via the Mweka route, where your tents will be pitched for the last time. The section from Uhuru down to Barafu (4 hours) is scree, then you head down through the various vegetation zones, on a continual downhill, into Mweka which is located on the edge of the rainforest area (3-4 hours). At an altitude of approx 3100meters, it’s nice to have some ‘air’ to ‘breathe! It is a long descent and trekking poles are recommended. Congratulations, you made it to the Roof of Africa! B.L.D.
Note—The Western Breach is the most difficult and demanding of the routes up Mt. Kilimanjaro. There is much more risk involved in using this route than the other routes. Part of the Western Breach was closed in 2006 due to a rock slide where several climbers as well as crew were killed.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Moshi
Our last hike of 3 to 4 hours is a descent of 3,500 feet to the trailhead at Mweka Gate. The hike is steep in places and may be slippery if wet. Again we recommend that you use trekking poles. At the gate you will say goodbye to your mountain crew and enjoy a picnic lunch. The trip leaders will take you back to your hotel for a much welcome hot shower and a celebration dinner.
B.L.D.
