Rock routes in the Pyranees

We’ll be heading down to Barcelona in two weeks time, and then back to France over the Pyranees. We don’t know too much about the Pyranees at this stage - other than there is climbing there, and I saw a good photo in one of the petzl catalogues some time ago! We’re not planning on spending too much time in the Pyranees, but would still be very keen to do some long rock routes.

Can anyone recommend some? Preferably eastern Pyranees? I was looking at a shot of Mallos de Riglos today - it looks good. Any areas where we should definately head given a short time frame? What about climbing guides?

What about climbing around Barcelona? Is Montserrat the way to go? How about climbing shops in Barcelona?

Any advice would be handy!

Thanks,

Liam (Australia)

Bon ben moi j’en profite…

There is nothing good to see in the south of France…only the northern part has the most beautiful rocks to climb, the best weather conditions and the sweetest population, nice stuff to eat, best pubs and best biers, great things to do, good people to meet, greatest surprising nature, most beautiful landscapes…people in south have no clue about what they’re missing

:|:):lol::lol:;):cool:

sorry just joking

Hi Liam,

all around Barcelona there are climbing areas most of them on limestone, and for sure Montserrat it’s a place to visit but climbing it’s different climbing.
about shopping in BCN, to get not specilized gear you can go to Decathlon because it’ s cheaper, there are some technical shops where you can get almost anything.
If you need a tourist guide send me an email

Hey Liam,

You’ll find lots of excellent sport crags around Barcelona. Dani was introducing some interesting hints in another thread last week: http://forum.camptocamp.org/viewtopic.php?pid=912170 (it’s in French though, hope you understand something )

Going NW from Barcelona you’ll find nice long sport climbs in Vilanova de Meia and Terradets (limestone). Long trad routes in Montrebei (limestone). Still further west, in the province of Huesca a very nice sport crag Rodellar (limestone) and Riglos, that’s a must, unique conglomerate towers, mostly bolted routes up to 300m but also some scary trad routes there.

There are beautiful rock climbs also higher up in the mountains, but you’ll find lot’s of snow now (you have to go in summer to fully enjoy those…).

Enjoy Spain and the Pyrenees!

Cheers
