Well, in North America, the first digit 1, means North America, the next 3 digits, put in brackets (514), means the area code (sometimes it may be the state or province but not necessarily as there might be many in one). The next 7 digits are the individual phone number (they used to be split in 3 and 4, the first three meaning the city but it’s not true anymore).
So the templace for North America is: 1(514) 555-1212
And by the way, now, in most area, you have to dial the whole number, including the area code to reach a number even though it may be local.

Eh bien, en Amérique du nord, le premier chiffre 1, s’applique pour dire Amérique du nord, les 3 chiffres suivants, placés entre parenthèses, désignent le code régional (correspondent parfois a la province ou a l’état mais de moins en moins puisqu’il y a souvent plusieurs codes régionaux dans bien des provinces). Les 7 chiffres suivants désignent le numéro personnel (anciennement, les 3 premiers de ce numéro désignaient la ville mais ce n’est plus vrai maintenant).
Le standard pour l’Amérique du nord est donc 1(514) 555-1212.
Et maintenant, en passant, il faut signaler les 3 chiffres du code régional même si on est dans la même zone.

Un petit truc intéressant en Amérique du nord, si vous utilisez le 1(XXX) 555-1212 (les 3 X étant l’indicatif régional désiré), vous rejoindrez l’information annuaire pour cet indicatif. C’est parfois pratique a savoir!
