Et voila maintenant le recit de notre voyage ce printemps(en anglais)
We came last spring for two month (2 sweeds, one english girl and me) to do some ski touring, one girl was snowboarding, probably the first one in Pakistan…
On the 30th of march, the first part of the expedition started with a 6 hour jeepride to Naran, from where we trekked up to Saiful Mulk lake(3300m) to set up the base camp. We stayed for 9 days, touring up and skiing down the surrounding peaks above the lake where the most part of a small documentary was filmed. Our best skiing was on the peak across the lake, a 45oom summit with a cool west face, 1300m of freeride directly down to the lake.
On the 11th of April, we left for Gilgit on a 14 hour bus trip along the Karakoram highway. We spent a few days in Gilgit organising our next trip, buying supplies and fixing our equipment. We left by jeep to Raikot village via the most incredible road in Asia, a 2m wide track digged in the cliff. We met up with our porters and hiked up through a pine forest to Fairy meadow at 3300m where we spent the night in log huts, just like in Switzerland. The next day we hiked up in the deep snow to a place called Gali where we set up our base camp at 3700m.
Bad weather came fast and we spent two days waiting in our tents. During the morning of the 3rd day, we warmed up ourselves, skiing through the birch forest around the camp and taking pictures. Then we toured up the ridge above the camp to 4400m where the view was breathtaking: Nanga Parbat(8125m) was there, just in front of us. We waited there for too long and were a bit late when we left: we started many small slides, but skied between them without trouble.
The next day we left early, crossed the Ganalo glacier to reach the Nanga Parbat base camp at 4100m. We kept on touring up to the Camp 1 at 4600m, from where we had the most incredible view to the dangerous Raikot face, the 3500m north face (only climbed 3 times) of the Nanga Parbat. We skied down in a good powder, putting fresh tracks just under the impressive 8125m mountain, great day!!! On the 21st of April, we started a tour up to Jalipur peak(5206m), but when we reached 4400m, some clouds appeared out of nowhere: 30 minutes later it started snowing and we had to ski back down to the camp.
It snowed for two days continuously and 30cm of heavy powder covered the camp. We were bored of the weather and decided to go back down the next day. The avalanche risk was really getting too high and we had no idea of when it would stop snowing. We moved the camp back to Fairy meadow in the snow storm. The villagers told us that the road was blocked by a landslide, so we rested there for two days. The weather was great and the sun incredibly strong, we could observe and hear the whole mountain coming down with the avalanches -not a good time for skiing anyway! The road opened again and we could get back safely to Gilgit.
We spent 10 days in Gilgit, visiting the surroundings and trying to obtain our permit to set up our base camp in the Khunjerab National Park. We had some problems to get it because of the security regulations: our basecamp would be just 4km before the Chinese border and only 100m away from the Karakoram highway.
We set up our base camp at 4400m on the 10th of May and spent two days exploring the surrounding valleys and frozen canyons on skis. On the 12th we toured up a nice 5130m peak further up in the valley. Skiing conditions were perfect on the way down: a real freeride playground!!!
On the next day, we visited the two only Chinese soldiers boringly keeping their border. Andreas started to feel altitude sick and decided to go back down. On the 15th of May we left early to tour up the imposing peak above the camp. After 7 exhausting hours, we reached the 5650m unclimbed summit and named it Shaheen peak. The big and open north west face was full of cold powder and we could ski down in high speed, cruising on the glacier all the way down to the Karakoram highway where we raced with a Chinese truck passing by, who was absolutely surprised to see us there. First ascent and descent, great snow, amaizing day!!!
Bad weather came back. After two days of waiting in the tents, we decided to stop the adventure and go back down to Gilgit. We were all tired and had the feeling that we had achieved our goals.
Thank you Pakistan!!!
