Missing Everest Guide Dawa Sherpa Found Alive After Nearly a Week

Solukhumbu, Nepal — In a remarkable survival story from Mount Everest, Dawa Sherpa, a Nepali climbing guide who had been missing above Camp III since last week, has been found alive after making an extraordinary descent alone from high on the world’s highest mountain.

Dawa Sherpa disappeared near Camp III during the final days of the spring climbing season, prompting concern among the mountaineering community. Despite extensive helicopter searches over the suspected areas on Wednesday, rescuers were unable to locate any sign of him.

Against all odds, Dawa survived for days in the harsh high-altitude environment and continued descending on his own

. Early this morning, a team from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) discovered him near Crampon Point in the Khumbu Icefall while he was slowly crawling toward Everest Base Camp.

The rescuers found him severely weakened and suffering from frostbite, but alive. He was immediately evacuated and brought to safety for medical treatment.

His survival after nearly a week missing high on Mount Everest is being hailed as an extraordinary feat of endurance, determination, and human resilience. The mountaineering community has expressed relief and joy at the news, calling his rescue one of the most remarkable survival stories of the 2026 Everest climbing season.

Dawa Sherpa’s incredible journey serves as a powerful reminder of both the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering and the remarkable strength of the human spirit. 🏔️

Wishing Dawa Sherpa a speedy recovery and good health.

" An update on Hillary Dawa Sherpa 🙏

Thank you so much to everyone who shared, read, and commented on the updates regarding Dawa. Your incredible support, prayers, and kindness mean the world to his family and well-wishers.

Yesterday, afternoon I went to the hospital to visit him. Because he is currently in the ICU—where visits are strictly limited to immediate family—I wasn’t able to see him directly.

However, I had the chance to spend time with his wife, daughter, nephew, and two young relatives. They shared some incredibly encouraging news:

Overall Condition: Dawa’s health has improved significantly, and he is now out of danger. He is speaking clearly and communicating well.

Frostbite Update: The condition of his fingers looks much better than initially feared. Treatment is ongoing, and there is high hope that extensive amputation won’t be necessary, though doctors are monitoring him closely.

Next Steps: According to his nephew, Kunga, Dawa is expected to be transferred to a general ward soon. Once he is moved, it will be much easier for friends and well-wishers to visit.

As for the full story of how he survived and the details of the incident, it’s best we hear it directly from Dawa when he is ready to share it.

But Kunga did share one incredible detail that stood out to me: despite spending so many days in such extreme conditions, Dawa managed to bring his backpack all the way down without leaving it behind. To me, that is a remarkable testament to his determination, discipline, and true professionalism.

Thank you once again to everyone who has shown such deep concern for Dawa’s well-being. Your prayers are being answered."
