Dear Lycra Wearing French,

I am interested in learning more about the history of Ski Mountaineering in Europe. Is anyone here aware of a book published in English that covers the history of European Ski Mountaineering.

Thanks!

Jeff

PS: I don’t like George Bush either!

Have you seen Peter Cliff’s ‹ Ski Mountaineering › ? long out of print (published 1987) but probably still available second hand or maybe in a library, is the best short account I’ve seen. Very short section on the history of ski mountaineering in Scotland in the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s ‹ Ski mountaineering in Scotland › (also sadly out of print).

If you also don’t like George Bush Jr, that’s all right.

If nobody objects the re-direction of this topic towards the sweet and graceful language of Dominique de Villepin, I could also suggest the followings :

  • La grande histoire du ski, following a permanent exhibition at the Musée Dauphinois in Grenoble
And from the alpine historian Yves Ballu, perhaps more complete, but hard to find :
  • L’hiver de glisse et de glace, Gallimard coll. découvertes, 1991
  • L’épopée du ski, Arthaud, 1981

You could also train your skills for Corneille and Racine with the reading of http://www.skistory.com - as the title does not completely explain, it is a french site upon ski history (didn’t find any english version except the domain name).

Hope this helps!

Arnold Lunn - History Of Ski-ing
http://www.alpenglow.org/ski-history

and the « bible » from an Alpine sight would be Marcel Kurz, winter mountaineering (or alpinism), first published 1915. I didn’t find any translation of this volume… may be is out of stock and you can only flukly find a paperback…

I don’t like so much G.W Bush, but it isn’t the right subject.
The right subject, if I understood your question, is talking about the history of Ski Mountaineering in Europe.
Then, I want to be honest with you, and for that reason avoid the history of ski mountaineering in Scotland in the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s ‹ Ski mountaineering in Scotland ›
« That’s a bit Bull **** ‹ Ski mountaineering in Scotland › » , if I can explain the opinion of an Australian friend of mine.
I’ m really sorry, if I hurt you, but the real ‹ Ski mountaineering › start in the Alps, maybe in Scandinavian countries, but It’s really flat.
I can give you just one title, really interresting, because I want to help you.
This is « L’Epopée du ski aux Pyrénées » in french version, Edition MILAN, Randonnées Pyrénéennes.
You can find it around Bagnères de Bigorre. But I think it would be also sadly out of print.
It would be difficult to find a good one in English.
Good luck.
