Has anyone walked the GR20 at the beginning of May? Obviously I’ll need an ice-axe and crampons. But is the avalanche risk to big?

In corsica, after a couple of nice days, it is known that the snow turns into icy very quickly
especially in May
This year there is still a LOT of snow ( about 1 m at 2000 m North, 40 cm at 1500 m)
Nice to go ski touring…
Today, the avalanche risk is 3 / 5 and will stay for the rest of the week
(see www. meteofrance .fr - montagne - click corsica map - bulletin neige et avalanches)
4 years ago , some friends of mine did it the 15 of may
Only of few (and steep …) spots were covered with snow : no problems however
They had the Gear , were almost beginners, but very tough guys
1 big advantage in early May : not too overcrowded
Of course you know that weather conditions are very versatile in this small island
The corsican range is one of the most rainy (and sometime snowy) spots in « France » and I don’t talk about the wind… (4 people killed because of the storm, temperature above O°C , a couple of years ago.)
When I will do it, I will think of this period of the year
So normally, the avalanches risk is low in May, but this is a special year
Follow the weather, you need a fair increase in the temperatures at the end of April
Fly or use Corsica ferries but not SNCM ferries…
Have a nice tour
