I’d like to ski the Haute Route Chamonix -Zermatt between december 2003 and january 2004; what do you think about it?
Did anyone ski in that places last days and what about snow conditions?

Conditions are not good!!! You have to wait more snow on ice-field! Cracks are too much open after the dog-days of last summer. May be in March or april…

That is not the best period. As a matter of fact, glaciers were almost bare until a few days ago. You will have to wait until the snowpack is thick enough to fill the crevaces. Usually best period start at the end of march until early june.
But you 'll have to keep in mind that the huts have a warden only in april-may. Otherwise, the refuges have a winter room always open, and usually (but not always) have wood and/or gas stoves, and also beds and blankets.
But if you plan to ski outside the guarder period, you’d better take all your food and a stove and its gas…
Anyway you will have to wait a good couple month to ski it in decent snow conditions this season !
